My first PC had Basic installed, running under DOS, I think, and you could write simple programs from day one. Now I have a Mac, and I don't think I can make it do 2 plus 2 under program control. (Excel doesn't count.) When & why did they start making you pay for a compiler or interpreter if you want to write simple programs for recreation?

I haven't looked at Basic in decades, but there are free development tools, just as GNU C compiler (gcc), which also does C++ and several other languages.
