I liked the book, but the movie just served as somewhat of a visual just to associate the characters. Personally I couldn't relate, however it does show the struggles that youth born on the wrong side of the tracks. I didn't consider it a controversial topic, and that is why I don't know of anybody who was offended by it.

I rd it in 7th grade. I'm in college now and I still go back to it every once in a while and reread my favorite parts. Its definitely one of my favorite books. In terms of it being contraversial, I'm sure at the time that it was published (mid 60s, i believe) it was seen as controversial and offended alot of people, especially because it's a book about gangs that's geared towards young adults. But I don't think many people would be offended by it now, unless they are ultra conservative. Also, many people think the book is inappropriate because it involves violence and murder, but the story is essentially a critique of the social cliques that initiate these rivalries that later result in premature deaths, so it is actually criticizing gang violence. The movie was made in the early 80s, and its decent. Has alot of today's male acting stars (Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez) and it's pretty loyal to the book's storyline. I would give it a 7 out of 10.
