fostex is a great little 4 track recorder, you can mix it down and end up with about 32 tracks if you play with it.
runs about 100 bucks.

not too bad for something so versatile.

It depends on what you're trying to do. If you're wanting to record CD quality tracks that you intend to sell, you'll need to spend some cash. You'll need a pretty fast computer, an interface (to plug your mics & instruments into) connected to the computer and some software like Pro Logic, Cubase or Cakewalk to do the physical recording. However, if your just recording demo material or rehearsals, a simple 8 track digital recorder (Tascam, Yamaha or Roland) would do fine.

LOL, Least expensive would be to just hook a microphone into your PC. Windows has a default recorder that is acceptable for recording stuff. So all you'd need is a microphone that works with your PC.

The program is in All Programs, then Accesseries, then entertainment, should be there under "Sound Recorder."

Enjoy.

I've used both of your first two respondants products and the Fostex is a bit better.
