was there a "real" wizard, or was it like in the movie where he was a fake guy from kansas in the hot air balloon?

The Wizard comes from the real world just as Dorothy does. Originally he has no real powers, he's just very good at manufacturing special effects. However, after his discovery and the return of Princess Ozma, Glinda teaches/grants some small magics to the Wizard.

It's been years and years since I've read the book, mostly I remember the movie version, but according to what I found in Wikipedia, he was just a man who used tricks and props to make himself seem to be a wizard. Here's the link:

In the beginning he was just a humbug from Kansas, but later in the series, Glinda taught him how to be a real wizard.
