i am 3cm dilated and today the dr stipped my membranes....how does that help speed labor up? and also at 3cm 50% effaced (that was 3 weeks ago they didnt tell me today) is it likely the procedure will be effective and how long will that usually take until i go into labor? i had it done around 11am this morning and went to the mall to walk and now its 2:30 i know it wouldnt really happen so suddenly but are we talking about tonight or monday??? i know having this done doesnt always send you into labor so i am wondering if at 3cm and so on i have a good chance it will??

Stripping the membranes will hopefully release prostoglandins which will in turn start the cervix thinning and dilating. It works about half the time. If it is going to work labor will begin within 36 hours. There is much debate about whether or not stripping the membranes causes a very long hard labor so be prepared.

I had my membranes stripped 3 times - weeks 37, 38, 39 and it didn't help me one bit - It only made me bleed. But I was only 1 cm and 70% effaced....I would guess you are pretty close to labor though. Im sure you are ready - i knwo how you feel. GET IT OUT!

You can go quite a few days, even a week or so, without labor even though they stripped your membranes.

They do it to try to speed up the process and the hormones that need to be released for labor.

Your best bet is to relax your mind, stay active, have sex, and use your breast pump.

it's about 50/50 with that. if it's going to do anything it will be within 24 hours. I had my membranes stripped, and it didn't change anything. my advice, just wait it out... your baby will know when it's time (and if it's stubborn, you can have them induce you by breaking your water instead of using drugs.) that's what i did, and it was great. I had no pitocin, and had a relatively short delivery. only 9 hours all together... only 30 minutes of pushing. good luck.
