My friend from work is throwing herself a baby shower. My mother told me that it's tradition to have your friends and/or family throw one for you. How do you guys feel?

***It's her second child. I think it's kind of tacky to throw yourself a baby shower. My friends and family planned one for me, but I wouldn't ever really think to throw one for myself... just seems weird.

I wouldn't consider it a baby shower if I was throwing one for myself but rather a welcoming baby shower.......I wouldn't want my guests to feel obligated to bring a gift under either circumstance given the situation, though. Good Luck and Enjoy whatever kind of party you have! And CONGRATS!

It is very tacky to throw yourself a baby shower. I don't really agree with having a baby shower for your second child in less its a different gender then the first. The only reason I would think she was throwing herself a shower is because she doesn't have any friends that would give her a shower. Just remember shes very excited about this.

I don't know if it's "bad etiquette" but it is kind of weird to me. I don't think it's a good thing to throw yourself something that the main point is to get gifts.
If you threw yourself a birthday party, that wouldn't be bad etiquette. That would just be wanting to celebrate your birthday with your friends and family. But let's face it, when you throw a baby shower the main purpose is to get loads of gifts for the baby.

I think it's kind of tacky. The reason for baby showers is to get gifts for the baby. It's kind of like throwing your own birthday party. I definatly think friends, parents, or co-workers should throw a baby shower for her. It's more fun anyway! Then you don't have to worry about planning or anything!

Mother knows best. Throwing your own baby shower - asking people to give you gifts - sounds a bit greedy to me. We don't even do this in the trailer park. :~) If she doesn't have family or friends, offer to have an office shower for her. If she does have other people to do it, or if it isn't the first baby, damned if I would go.

I think its kind of tacky. I have a friend right now who is basically throwing herself one too. She however, is making it "Given by big brother". Its the same thing really, she's just being creative.

It is not proper to throw yourself a baby shower even with your first child. Most people don't even have one at all with their 2nd child unless someone just gives them one.

ummmm. good question. Ive never heard of anyone throwing themself a baby shower. Well I wouldnt look down on her for it. I would feel bad that she doesnt have friends or family that is willing to do that for her. Unless this is not her first kid, if it is not her first then yes it is bad etiquette

It's really tacky. It shows that you're very gift hungry.
No one should EVER throw their own babyshower. A sister or close friend can but never the mom or dad to be.
