You can find tide charts for your area in the local newspaper ( if a coastal area ) or on-line

do not use a general tide table they are a bit off due to local conditions such as currents ( currents and coastal features will not only effect the height of a tide but also the timing )

tides are on a cycle based on the moon not the day so they always vary and even expert yachtsman need the tables to keep track of the
exact time

while at the beach a general guide is - if you see wet sand the tide is going out , if the waves are touching dry sand the tide is coming in

You get a high tide twice a day. It by about an hour at a time throughout the week. Find a stationary object (like a dock) on the beach where you crab and watch the water level in comparison to that, you'll start to notice the tide times then.

we'll the best way for me to tell is when the moon is full and high in the sky because the postion of the moon determines how the tide is affected and when the moon is low then we have low tide

the tide is based on the lunar cycle of the moon. it is when the depth of the ocean changes based on the position of the earth relative to the sun and moon. for a deeper explaination check this article in wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide
