Being depressed is part of the package...the good news is that this too shall pass; or you can do what I did and get on an anti-depressant. Oh yes; and I am serious about that--never under estimate the power of "better living thru chemistry."
There are several excellent sites on this time in our lives and with 100s of people a second turning 50 there are LOTS of us...
try powersurge.com or womantowoman.com or hystersisters.com(an hysterectomy is not required)
Good luck...think of it as the opposite of puberty and you know how lovely teenagers are...

You wrote that you are depressed because you have menopause? There is nothing wrong in being menopausal, I am a 64 yr. old woman, and I still am having difficulties with the symptoms that are associated with it. But I am a strong will person that when my periods stopped at the age of 52yrs. old, I came to terms and figured that it was menopause. so I did the best I could and took over the counter drugs for my symptoms, I am scared of Doctors, so I deal with it the best I can. It is up to you how you are going to handle this situation, because it is not going to go away, think positive not negative and come to terms with it. I give thanks to God that I know that there are better things in life then Menopause. My family, who are the ones that have to put up with my moods. And for that I am thankful.

My mom is going thru the same, the thing to realise is that it's not the circumstances but ur own state of mind and once u realise it u also realise that it is smthing u hv control over, so feel happy. Depending upon wether ur working or not, try and take out time (preferably when ur alone at home and there's no one to disturb u) for something u really enjoy. like dancing or listening to music u really like or reading books or magz( smthing that's spicy and not dull) talk to women ur own age as very few ppl of a different age group r able to understand ur problem. From an always fit person to suddenly suicidal, thats how my mom became. But i luv her very much and despite the age diff i try to understand her problems. today she's bk to her normal self though hot flushes still continue. the whole thing lasted a year. Also my mom was prescribed a very mild anti-anxiety pill, so talk to the doctor but think of it as an alternative, the real medication is in ur mind, never forget that. And like every phase of life this too shall pass.
if u like my ans plz mk it ur best, it makes me know how u found it to be.

Hi, I'm also 48 & starting with menopause.--Sleepless nights, Burning feet, increased hunger, all that but the worst is my temper---I can't even take a little bit of anykind of bulshit from anyone without losing it. The best thing is to remind yourself that u r goin thru something right now, and eventually it will pass. Of course there is hormone pills bu they are worse--They make you Blow up like a balloon--(gain weight --at least 20lbs--that is a fact) and they can cause body hair, moles, blood clots, etc,.) Just think that our mothers and grandparents went tru it without any hormone treatments . They survived, so will you.

don't think of it as the end of your life, it is a new beginning with less "headaches". i get depressed too, and bitchy and moody and angry and anxious...all that. but, i have to stop and think, and make myself look at what i am doing and try to take control of my life. after all, it is a new beginning in a lot of ways. do the pollyanna thing and find something positive in everything negative. it does help. so do my hormone pills and supportive hubby. the best part is, it WILL get better, really!. best of luck to you.

Looking beyond your current situation is helpful. There are few of us who want to get old, but yet we see so many happy and productive people who are no longer kids. You will get past it and you will look back with some humor. Life is good. Make sure you enjoy every day since they are so precious.
