law of exponents issue?

I know that x to the 2nd times x to the 4th is x to the 6th. But what is x to the 2nd PLUS x to the 4th????

x^2 + x^4 cannot be added. It's just x^2 + x^4.

It could be simplified as x^2 (1 + x^2).
