First of all, it is not true that you can't tell if you're dilating. Many women feel "different" as their cervix opens during labor and can advice their own labor and delivery nurse that they need to be checked again.

Anytime you feel oddly, different, or can't explain a certain feeling you have, during pregnancy, you should at least call your doctor, and mostly likely see the doctor or nurse practitioner to be sure.

However, please don't freak out, stress can make it worse if you are actually going into premature labor. While 31 weeks is definately not the ideal time to deliver a baby, it is past the 'danger zone' that most doctors set at 30 weeks for infant survival. Your doctor will not, however, willingly let you deliver now, if you get to the office soon enough. You will probably be put into the hospital, given medication, and put on bed rest, if you are, indeed, in labor.

I had my first kid 2 and a half months ago, 1 month early. I felt great up until a week before I gave birth in which I bled mildly in my pants and had a clear spit-like discharge. I went to the emergency room because obviously blood isn't supposed to be coming out, and they said I was maybe 2 fingers dialated. So I went home and another week later I started cramping like a normal period at like 3 AM. I didn't know what was goin on but I felt fine besides that so I waited a couple hours and stayed off my feet. It did not subside so at around 8 AM I went in to the emergency room again but it took them forever to get around to me I guess because I was a month early. When the doctor came in the "officially" check dialation, I was 6 cm and I wasn't goin home. Within 30 minutes I was 8 cm and they broke my water and another 30 minutes I had my baby.

Point is, your not gunna know if you're dialating, in fact your water doesn't even have to break in order for that baby to be ready to come out. If you're cramping, or seeing any discharge you should definately go find out what's going on. I don't know why you would think you are dialating because you can't feel it, I know I had some pulsating down there I wondered what it was (thought it was contractions) but it turned out it was the baby with hicups :P

Edit: in response to the above answer, I think the reason you can tell when you need checked again is because as you dialate your cramping (contractions) intensifies or at least that's how it was for me.

You can't feel dilation of the cervix. But your doctor or nurse should be able to. 31 weeks is too early to be dilating normally. What symptoms make you feel you might be dilating? Have you passed any mucous or blood? Are you cramping? I'd just call your doctor and explain what you feel. They can make a more educated guess as to where you are in the pregnancy. You could be having Braxton-Hicks contractions, which are often called false labor. Check with your doctor to be safe.

I don't see how you would know. I started Dialating at 36 weeks and I had no clue...until the dr told me. Have the dr do an exam.

why would you think that? You shouldnt know , only your dr would know. And your way too early to dialate. If you truly think you are you should call your doc. right away so they can try to stop labor this early

There is no way to tell until your doc checks, unless of course the baby is coming out them I think it is obvious

unless you know how to get your hand up there on your own, you have to wait for the doctor to check you. (plus, i wouldn't suggest doing it yourself because if you do you will introduce bacteria into your uterus... no good)
