I have work-study at the Career Services department of my college. My work-study supervisor told me that I should start charging and contracting to do freelance desktop publishing. And she knows I am in the process of creating a portfolio, to make money on the side.
She is a very by the books type person and she doesn’t want to bend any rues to help any
Students. BUT she also is an author, but she wants me to design a flyer and cover for her
book under work-study pay. I don't think this is fair because I am being paid by the school , and if she went out to contract someone she would have to pay out of pocket, a lot more than $7 an hour. I am shocked because she is trying to take advantage of me and is coming up with all these ideas for a flyer but she isn’t sayin anything about paying me, she is trying to make it under work-study, what should I tell my hypocrite boss?

Don't do anything to tell her off. I'm not at all religious, but fate has a way of catching up with such people. Let it go.

First mistake. How do you know? Because your boss told you? Second mistake, you're a creative person. Specially efforts are always made to circumvent you with the lowest type of opportunistic people known to man. Make it a practice to be polite. And trust absolutely no one. To find such people one must first empty a septic tank, drain it, then scrape at the bottom til you feel cement, and look underneath that. Just because someone comes off with religious clap trap means nothing. The swine of this earth have been doing that for two thousand years. Cesare Borgia, The Popes, The Swaggarts, Bakkers, Oral Roberts and the lot. There is a God. But he doesn't mix with swine. Do thou likewise and be alert. Simple. No pay? No play. Luv ya.

That kind of sucks but being slightly dishonest myself, I'd do the cover and bill 3,4 or 5 times the amount of hours for it. What can she say?

So if it takes you 3 hours, bill for 12, that way you get paid a fair hourly rate, your boss gets her book cover and the University get the shaft... screw the man! Making you work for $7/hr.. they deserve it. :)

Difficult situation, I know that you are going to get people telling you to be upfront and honest etc. but I'd be worried that refusing would have other consequences.

Treat her as you would any other client. Sit down with her discuss her needs. Draw up a proposal, with price included. Make the last line of the proposal be a warm line of appreciation for supporting your new desk top publishing company.Act as if it never occurred to you that she would expect it for free because it isn't ethical and she's your SUPERVISOR!!!

JUST DO IT.
you will get a published flyer and cover to use in your resume. If she is happy with it you will also get a good reference. I would be flattered to be asked to design a cover for someone's book, do your best, don't complain.

Tell her you play by the books too and you'll need approval from all of the Administration to do this. Tell her you will ask them yourself as you want their approval in writing.

Tell her w/the holidays coming your just to busy to help her out. That wouldn't be a lie, b/c everybody's busy then!
The Bible says, "DO NOT JUDGE"....just pray about this & put it in Gods hands.

Simply tell her that doing so would be an ethical violation on her part as it would be considered maleficence of office and might be a violation on your part as well.

Don't Tell her off, let God take care of her. People like that will get their time in the end. Are you religious? If not then why should you care? I know it might tick you off, but let her do her on thing and let it roll off your shoulder.
