i have a 6 year old ferret that i can't take care of anymore. he's healthy but he's quite the handful. he's a biter and pretty antisocial. i'm a lot more busy now than when i got him, and it's not fair for him to be stuck in his cage as much as he is. i called a rescue place awhile ago and they said because of his age they weren't too sure about taking him(even though he could easily live another 5-6+ years), and they tried to make me feel worse than i already do. also, most people i know don't want him because he's a biter. he's not a bad ferret though, he was just mistreated when he was younger(the owners before me abused him). i took him so he wouldn't be put to sleep or abused more. does anybody know what i could do, where i could go, to get him a happier, safe home?

Hopefully one of these aren't the one you called. I've heard of places giving people a hard time, that really ticks me off. There's lots of reasons people have to get rid of their pets, and they can be so nasty. I think you're being very unselfish doing this, you understand you don't have the proper time for him, there's no need for them to be crappy. Just my 2 cents...... I'd try to stick with an actual ferret rescue as opposed to a shelter. Especially if he's not very sociable. If you were close to me I'd take him, TN though too far. Also check your surrounding states too, more options.

Okay, I'm sincerely trying to answer your question here because I believe you want to do what is best for your ferret. However, claiming that your ferret is still a biter because he was abused when younger really identifies that you have never been able to spend the amount of time and give the proper care to your ferret. Even the worst biters usually cease the behavior within 6 months of proper care.
Second, when you get a pet you take responsibility to care for the pet properly until they die. Please include this responsibility if you ever decide to get another pet.
Now, most ferrets live to be 6-8 years old. With incredible proper care including a good amount of medical care, they can live to be 10-12 years old, but this is not the norm as so many people do not give their pets proper care and medical care.
Call around to local vets and see if they know of a ferret shelter. Also, call around to dog and cat shelters and ask them. Maybe even try pet stores. You will find a home for your ferret if you take the time and put in the effort.

Unfortunately I can't take your ferret as I live in Manchester, England but if I lived in Maryland I would definitely have him as I already have 1 ferret - Freddie and ferret math has struck!!! I feel really sorry for you and your ferret because you probably really love each other and to have to give him up must be really hard. You are obviously a caring owner or you wouldn't really give a toss about him being stuck in his cage all day so although I can offer you no real solutions to your question I just want to say good luck and good for you for rescuing him from abusive owners in the first place - big kisses xxx

Easily live another 5-6 years? Ferrets only live around 7-8 years! At 6 years old I would HIGHLY recommend that you stick with your commitment and make his last year or so the best you can. It would be traumatizing if you left him now and that wouldn't be good at his age.
It sounds like he has always been a biter. Are you sure he isn't deaf? It could be from the abuse from before but he should have gotten out of it by now. When he bites simply say no and scruff him.

the best place to put him is caaws.
it's an animal place that doesnt put animals to sleep after being there to long, they keep them there until they are bought, sometimes the workers even take them home if they get emotionally attached.
you can probably look them up in the phone book. If not call and ask the operator.
