Rogers, Pearl. Tama, Yamaha, Ludwig. There's so many brands out there but for a first set, I wouldn't worry so much about brand names. I'd wait to invest in heavy duty equipment until you see if your son has talent & drive for music. If he does, then get him lessons & his teacher can help you pick something that will be more fitting to his style & the genre of music he's playing.

I'd also suggest a second instrument, or perhaps music theory/appreciation class, maybe even composition. Good luck & I hope you have a future world class musician on your hands.

Go to a GOOD musical insterment store and look at what they sell. The usually have a used equipment board in the back of the store. You can post an ad stating what you are looking for and why. Some musicians will DONATE to a young person starting out! This is a good way to get your boy a quality drum set that won't break your budget. It's also a good way for him to meet the people who are in the biz! This is how my boy got in the biz himself. Musicians don't look like much, but they will take care of their own! GOOD LUCK!

My friend got Rogers. My cousin also told me that cymbals from Pearl are really bad. So I recommend getting Rogers drums.
