i own 99 mitsubishi eclipse with manual transmission.
until 12 hours ago my car seemed to run pretty smooth.
but today morning when i start it, it wouldn't get into the gear.
i had to force the gear stick into the gears. Also i noticed that when i was in reverse gear, releasing the clutch very slightly got the car moving more than usual.
1. Does it look like something with the clutch ?
2. How much money i might be looking at to get it repaired depending on what it is?
3. I go to greg's japanese auto, in chandler, arizona. They're quite expensive though. if it's a clutch thing should i go to someone who specializes in those. do you know anyone in arizona who work's with clutches, gearboxes e.t.c ?

My mechanic called.
Said problem is with hydraulics, there's a leakage.
i need a new clutch master or a new clutch slave.
he said i'm looking at 440 + taxes.
does that sound expensive or is it reasonable.
how much time does it take to replace these guys ?

no, none of the above. your clutch is fine. the problem is that your clutch master cylinder is low on hydraulic fluid. you can add regular brake fluid in there. get dot 3 brake fluid. and its also possible that it may have a leak someplace. after you add the fluid in the clutch master, you need to keep an eye on it to see if its getting low on fluid again. and if it is, then it has a leak and you have to take it to the shop. but at this point. once you add fluid, it should be fine after pumping the clutch a few times. now deppending how bad the leak is, if its leaked too much fluid, then there is a possibility that air could get in there and just adding fluid will not take care of the problem. if just adding fluid doesn't take care of the problem , then your going to either have a bad clutch master cylinder, or a clutch slave cylinder. if any of those have to be replaced, your looking at about 200-250 dollars or less if its the clutch slave cylinder. the clutch master cylinder is usualy located on the driver side, in the engine compartment , in the corner of the drivers side closest to the driver. between the corner of the fender and the firewall. and its located next to the brake master cylinder. but the clutch master cylinder is smaller than the brake master cylinder. so look for something that has a black cover on it and that looks like it would hold fluid, and open the cap and add regular brake fluid in there and it should be ok. good luck.

If it is a hydraulic clutch, check level of fluid in reservoir, master cylinder actuating pushrod and associated mechanism.

If cable, maybe the cable has started to fray or stretch, or the adjusting mechanism is faulty.

Check the cheapest items first before going for a new clutch!
