Think about a primitive hunter, who was so good at it that he had more skins and meat than he could use. Imagine that he may have hung some pelts and dried meats from a frame, in front of his "cave."

This would be an example of an early form of advertisement.

Now, think eve farther back, to the birds that puff out their colorful breasts and screech their loudest to attract a female for breeding purposes. This is no different in intent and practice than any advertising campaign on today's market. Fish in the sea have done it, perhaps dinosaur crests were raised for much the same reason.

Where and whenever competition has existed, some form of advertising has been part of it.

Nobody knows - advertising has been around since the first shop keeper ever put a sign over his door. Probably even before then.
And as new media developed, advertising developed along with them (newspapers, radio, tv, internet, ...). As time passed, advertising even became a business itself, with advertising agencies, academic studies, etc. So it's been a continuous development.

The truth is advertising has been around for a very long time. Before there was money people traded goods and services.
