Why do games often come out in Japan and America a year before they come out in EU?

Because they have to be translated/localized and it takes time, plus while the game is being translated the developers usually take the time and go back and additions or other changes aside from the translation. The reason Europe has to usually wait longer is due to their again having to make translations (German, French, Spanish, ect) and converting it to PAL which it self isn't all that hard.

It depends on the publisher/developer. Most big publishers like to aim for a simultaneous shipout where their big titles are concerned - or at the very least a european and US shipout.

Often, games that are developed in the far east ship out there first, and are then localised into the other languages. This localisation and re-coding takes time. the games then have to be tested, QA'd and submitted to Sony/microsoft/nintendo if they are console games.

It's all about time..

Does depend on where they're made... Nintendo releases in Japan first, Microsoft in America.
