To Judge Dredd - You might want to take a remedial reading class. Do I mention the US anywhere in my question?

To - Pseudo Obscure, my uncle had horror stories about what went on there. Sorry, I disagree about how well they were treated.

They probably would - although nobody can be utterly certain - because in the post-war period they had to face up to the consequences of their own demons (Germany more than Japan; Germany had a strict de-nazification programme and, arguably, the ability to judge their own actions in the light of a much longer European tradition - Roman in law, Greek in culture, Judeo-Christian in religion); in Japan there remained the habit of thinking of anyone non-Japanese as less worthy than themselves, which is why they've never really faced up to what they did to - for example - the 'comfort women' and why the atrocities in Nanking (which killed more than Hiroshima plus Nagasaki combined) don't appear in their history books. But nonetheless I think you could argue that they've known the worst of which they are capable and been shamed by it.

What's much more problematical, in my view, is that those nations that have never really been brought face-to-face with the worst that they can do would stand less chance of following the Geneva Conventions - as we witness at the moment with Bush demanding permission to torture.

To a visible extent yes, but behind closed doors no. It's the same way it was back then. If no-one knows about it going on nothing will stop it. Like this whole Hezbollah / Israel conflict. All the fighting and focus of the media was over the fighting. I always wanted to know about the 3 captives that the Hezbollah had snatched. Where did they keep them, what were they doing to them, etc etc. But the media never exposes that, because we're too desensitized to violence and "explosions" and Katusha's.That apparently was the reporting that would make the media outlets money, instead of running stories about the 3 captives.

It's sad that that is what the whole conflict was over and you never heard anything really about the prisoners. What a selfish world we live in.

Have any of the genius's that answered this question ever read or seen the Geneva Conventions? Nearly every planet on the country is a party to the the treaties. The Islamic radicals that perpetrated 9/11, and nearly all of the terrorist attacks since, are not soldiers from a warring country. No government claims them. They are fighting for their religious beliefs and Ideals. They are not soldiers that qualify under the treaties, therefore, the rules of the treaties do not apply. Unless on of theose countries over there wants to claim them, in which case there would be a few crimes against humanity trials going on at the Hague. Instead, the coward governments that sponser these fighters won't claim them. Do you think they knew that it would cause a problem with our government, and further divide our country? I think so. THey are using the things that make our country one of the greatest on the planet, against us. They know we are honorable, stand up for human rights, and believe in our freedoms. They have made us look dishonorable (Chavez's remarks), Made us look like we are torturing every fighter we capture and are forcing Americans to reconsider the freedoms that we have never questioned before(patriot act)(national ID cards)(border security)(freedom to take shampoo with us when we go on vacation). All of these things pit American against American. They aren't winning, but they are making progress. They aren't soldiers, they are murderers.

To a small extent, the Germans did follow articles of the conventions when it came to Western combatants.

The Japanese didn't sign the convention before World War II so they were not duty bound to follow it.

The Germans in US POW camps were treated very well. That's the difference between fascist Nazi scum and good old FDR.

Yes, I think they would today, but not then. And I sure do not want my government to try to be badder than the bad Nazis, Axis Japanese, and Islamofascists.
