The original cave at Altamira is located near Santillana del Mar, Cantabria of northern Spain, 30km West of Santander. It is famous for the colored paintings in its ceiling featuring stone age drawings. The drawings show bisons, horses, red deer and boar, eight engraved anthropomorphic figures and some other figures. Caves of Altamira, classified as Karst cave is the most exceptional evidence of the Magdalénian culture in southern Europe. Visitors access to the caves are now limited to 160 weekly for the reason that the carbon dioxide breathed out by visitors damages the old paintings.

In 1962, the first copy of the cave was made by the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany. By 1964, second copy of the cave was made for Madrid, Spain.

An artificial reproduction of the cave called Altamira II exists in Lascaux, which is part of the nearby Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira, built by the spanish Architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg was inaugurated by Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia on July 17, 2001.

The Cuevas de Altamira, are in Santillana del Mar, Santander, Spain.

They are very difficult to visit now, as the visits have been limited to a maximum of 9000 per year, and there is a very long waiting list.

However a complete and faithful reproduction of the caves has been built nearby, along with an archeological museum. These are open to visitors.

The Caves of Lascaux of a similar value, are not in Spain, but in southern France, east of Bordeaux, near the town of Montignac in la Dordogne.
Parts of these caves have also been reproduced for visiting, and the originals closed to general vistors, to avoid their deteriorating.
