My hotpoint aquarius wma 35 will do a wash cycle, and drain but will not kick in to do the spin.
I think it may be a block filter, but do not know where it is. (had exact same problem before and ex husband fixed it, did not see what he was doing).
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hotpoint Washing Machine Not Spinning

2016-11-05 21:47:54 · answer #2 · answered by barn 4 · 0 0

It's probably not a filter (otherwise it would not drain), but a problem with the drive belt.
Washers have a belt (like a fan belt on a car) that goes from the motor to the wash tub. The belt moves either the tub or the agitator to wash, then spin the tub for the spin cycle. Many washers have seperate belts for the spin cycle (since it's high-speed and doesn't oscillate). Your belt may be either broken, too tight, or too loose, all of which could cause spin to not work.
Take a look inside the back of the machine and check the belts -- it's easy to fix if the belt is broken or the tension is wrong. Good luck.

If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

* The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

* The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

* A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

* The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

* The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

* The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

* The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

One thing to check is the Safety Lid Switch which closes when the lid is closed and goes into spin. If switch is bad then machine will not spin. Hope this helps

It could be a mechanical problem if you haven't stuffed too many clothes in the washer. Do you run it on spin one more time after it cycles? If this doesn't work, you may need to call a repairman.

check the bottom front of the machine there may be a piece which comes off usually the filter is under there......usually turn and pull it out but make sure if you find it you have a towel down as there will be excess water in there.....usually find its a bra wire.....have a good fish around then rinse the filter and put back...if not the filter then possible need new drive belt which needs a call out to repair....

most common of all problems is in the timer switch which sends signals to switching valve to open (fiil or drain) and close
the timer is basically a clock
it should only be turned clockwise.....even if you pass up the spot you wanted to set it to keep going around again
if you back it up you will break off the little nylon tabs that operate micro switches that allow the unit to do all the different cycles
bet u turned it backwards, didnt u ?

the problem might not be the filter but the brushes in the motor
these can be spotted if you take the lid off the machine and you
will see a motor with a belt running round it on this motor are
two connectors these are attached to brushes if these wear
down then the machine will not spin.
