Actually, as one who works for the civil service, I can tell you that we have so many cases to deal with, and so much legal regulation to contend with, that it's not as easy to review and clear a claim as it seems. The gov keeps changing the rules. So the law keeps moving. Add to that the fact that everyone is down on the civil service at the moment, the gov is cutting jobs so there are fewer staff, yet demanding more productivity and better accuracy all round. It's no wonder things can take a while. Honestly, we are all doing the best we can but we are labouring under a heavy burden. And from the comments you can see on here, you can see how we are getting the stick for all this. Honestly we are not into dragging our heels and making people suffer. There is actually nothing that gives us more pleasure then completing a case and knowing someone got the right amount and wasn't cheated. But think about this. If the forms are complicated for the people filling them in, how much more for those trying to work through them to assess a claim? And no one ever seems to hear of the countless times we get it right.

Not said why you having to claim tax credits or if child tax credits, working tax credits or both. Basically if could take upto 8 weeks to sort but if your receiving a benefit like Income Support or Jobseekers & claiming Child Tax why don't you go speak to your adviser, can usually get abit more info out of them re the delay. If you've stopped claiming cos got a new job & now claiming working tax again go see adviser as they should have offered to "fast track" your claim.
Alot of this depends on your adviser & how much they want to help so I'm really sorry if you had a bad un or just that your getting really bad treatment from Inland Revenue. You could always asked to speak to a supervisor if getting same reply each time you call, why not request an emergency payment or you could always contact your MP.

Only 4 weeks. I have been in dispute with them for 4 years!! Still not sorted. The department is a shambles. Some that are overpaid are let off. Others have to pay it back. Asylum seekers can claim what they want, and if they are overpaid, so what. No one ever asks them to pay it back, for fear of being branded racist.
One rule for them, another for us!!

They are hired for this trait so that fewer people get tax credits.
Ask who is dealing with it, which office is it in right now, and how long you can expect the rest of the process to take. Ask to speak to supervisors, managers, the director. They'll deal with it just to get you out of their hair.

You are talking about a government office...of course its taking forever, its a government office. Hang in there and try not to kill anyone. All you can do is politely inquire every week or two about the status of your claim.

i saw a report on tv where they gave the 'work out' sheet (equation for working out how much tax credits people are entitled to) to 3 mathmatical geniuses and even they couldn't work it out! No wonder they keep over paying people and helping them get into even more debt! Grrrrrr, its about time they simplified things!!!

They are minor civil servants. Like Council employees tend to be, they are hiding away from the real world that would find them out and sack them.
