cataract lens, standard" vs "multifunctional"(?)?

I am having cataract surgery 10/4/06 but do not understand the multifunctional(?) vs standard lense. Doctor not really clear. Seems to be concerned more about $$ than function.

There are single focus intra ocular lens implants and "multifocal" implants such as ReZoom. The multifocal function some what like a bifocal contact lens in that they place a lens that focuses both distance and near in the visual axis at the same time. I've not yet decided how to tell who is a good candidate for the compromise of the multifocal lens implant. It does not yield as sharp a focus at either distance or near as a single focus lens dedicated to that single distance. Medicare doesn't pay for the multifocal IOL, but will allow the patient to pay the difference in charges.

But we have never heard this term either. Be sure to ask thorough questions of your Dr. so you don't keep wondering. I would say if you aren't content with your Dr. you may be wise to find a better one.
