News is something that somebody, somewhere wants to keep quiet, or will make somebody say "ouch".
Everything else is just advertising.
The answer to who decides news is news editors. Unfortunately they are being increasing controlled not by former journalists (as used to be the case) but by accountants who want things done ever cheaper.
To get all major news outlets to pick up a story you have to get it picked up by a news agency which supplies all outlets. the accountants think it is cheaper for their news to come to them pre-written rather than carefully researched by experienced and qualified journalists.
You can read more about this on my Yahoo 360 Blog. But bare in mind it's new and, so far, only has two posts!

I even have by no potential understood the theory of considerable circulate media. I even have heard Fox information, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, and NBC all communicate concerning to the main considerable circulate media as though it have been somebody else. CBS in all likelihood does it too yet i don't watch them. countless newspapers do an identical element. So who's the main considerable circulate media?

Some reporter, with maybe a little oversight or direction by someone above him.
It is highly doubtful that anyone in the executive suites tell people what to write, it is also doubtful that the writers are called to task as long as the polls look good. They are businesses after all
It is amazing to me however having said all of that that the NYT is still pulling its same old crap considering their economic position. Their stock has tanked and I have heard that Fidelity is selling large blocks due to fundholder complaints about NYT.

media companies present what they believe the people want, based upon past experience - sex, drugs, crime and death sell. Drama and trauma sell. A handful of companies own almost all of the media, and this in turn narrows the number of content selectors.
So when these elements combine, say, on a battlefield, it's only natural that they become the focus - and then this becomes called 'liberal' bias.
If Cons really believed in the 'libera' media, they'd seek to restore genuine competition in the media. But they don't. They get it both ways - a media centealized enough to manipulate and that won't ask the tough questions, and one they call still demonize as the 'liberal' media.

Dumbed-down Journalism graduates, who get their jobs by going four years without a job. They isolate themselves from reality while in college, but still learn nothing about history or grammar (MEDIA, by the way is plural). I see you're expecting an answer about how the media are slanted. That's irrelevant because these people are ambitious imbeciles who have no right to their jobs, so you won't get an ideological or sensationalistic slant, you get an ignorant and incompetent slant.

The people do. Ratings and circulation. Media knows that bad stuff sells. War,killings, rapes people are more interested in that. If ratings are high they know they're going down the right path same thing with circulation
