I woke up to the sounds of my 1 year old sobbing in her crib this morning. This is so unlike her- she usually wakes up laughing. I went and got her out of the crib and she wouldn't let me put her down for about an hour. If I put her down she'd scream. This is all so unlike her. Was this just a nightmare or something? Was she so traumatized that she wouldn't even scream out loud, just sit and sob and whimper? God, it was heartbreaking.

It might just be that she is going into a stage where she wakes up upset. Most nightmares happen early in the sleep cycle, like after 2 or 3 hours of sleep, but that could be what upset her. My daughter is 2 and wakes up crying from time to time. She just wants to be held and can't communicate to me what has upset her. I just figure she's having a rough day, because it always passes.

It very well could have been a nightmare or it could just be apart of separation anxiety. Separation anxiety usually starts and peeks about 12 to 18 months. She could be not feeling well either. Just watch her and maybe give her some extra attention today. Hopefully things will be better tonight and tomorrow morning.

Night terrors. Bad nightmares that children have that are very hard to wake up from. Her eyes might even be open, but she is still dreaming.

Just hug her and speak softly.
