OK, since you ruled out the obvious of oxygen, water, and affection....

I'd say no one's going to last for very long without a consistent source of external heat production---whether it's a fire for cooking, a furnace to keep you warm, or clothing to maintain temperature control.

If you want a specific doodad?---a tool?---I'd have to vote for the wheel/axle combination as the most universally-useful thing that makes life in many ways do-able. Without this, a lot of machinery is going to flop miserably....
