After your spouse dies is there paperwork that has to be filled out to declare the living spouse a widow or widower? My dad past and my mom needs to know.

I always thought it was a courtesy title.

No paper work to fill out, she automatically becomes a widow no matter what.

She is a widow - there is no paperwork to earn that title.

Affidavit of Death - record it with the county recorder's office .... you can find the forms on-line usually ... you will need the original certified death certificate when you get it recorded ... !
