We usually let the village children use our swimmimg pool while we have our summer break but an earth tremor has cracked the lining and it's being repaired while we are away. The villagers are demanding their four week use when it's ready but we will be back in residence and I've said no. Now I'm told we being thought of as old meanies. How to placate them?

well i think you are a very nice person letting the people in your village the use of your pool whether you charge them to use it or not. at the end of the day if it needs repairing there is nothing anyone can do about it. If they were to help in some way of helping for the cost of repairs or pay something for use to cover repairs i could understand them being the way they are being to a certain degree but they have no right i calling you meanies as you have been kind enough to let them have use of it whilst in good working order.

My view on it is if they cant except the fact the pool is going to need general repairs from time to time then i wouldnt be so kind hearted as to let them use it anymore as they arent greatful of your kindness.

Right who's actually said this - one of the villagers or one of your "friends" trying to worry you about tittle tattle - wait until someone says something direct and just explain that this year the pools out of action but they can use it next year - you are doing this as a favour and you should not feel obliged - just think would any new owners allow this to continue if you moved?? If you really want to come to an agreement tell them you'll let them use it one weekend and have a extra holiday!!!

What cheek! They get free use of a pool and they're ungrateful - they've come to see it as a right. Well it is not a right but a kindness on your part, and they have to understand that. It's your property and there is no obligation on you to allow them to use your pool ever again if you don't choose to. Another thing: have you ever wondered what would happen if one of the children was hurt or even drowned in your pool while you were not there? Would you be liable to be sued as it happened on your property? If you're talking about a property in the UK, you may well be at risk and you might want to talk to a lawyer before you allow this practice to go on, especially in your absence.

They sound bl**dy cheeky to me!

Why do they demand anything - even if they pay you for the priviledge if your pool was out of action due to a natural disaster then it was out of action and that is tough.

If they don't pay - don't they want to use it again? Doesn't sound like they deserve to use it all.

Don't bother to placate them - if you really want to you could offer its use next time you are away, or during restricted hours. I suspect the noise levels will be intolerable for four weeks.

All the very best - don't let them take advantage - you are the one funding the pool.

Do they pay to use your pool? If not, remind them how often they have used it for nothing and tell them that if they want to use it this time, the price will be high to accommodate the cost of having it repaired from the tremor. Tell them you are not mean it's your property and you don't have to let anybody use it.
