it won't hurt to try it. pour some tabasco on ice, and see if it'll melt.

Tabasco will, but not for the reason you're expecting.

Chiles (and the sauce made from them) do not generate any heat -- the active chemical in them, called capsaicin, simply excites the nerve endings in the human body (and other mammals, apparently) that respond to heat. But it's all a big fake -- there's no actual heat involved.

However, because Tabasco sauce is made with crushed chiles, vinegar, and salt, the salt will melt ice -- but it will make it colder.

try this lind and search freezing point depression. Would make a great science fair project for middle school.

The answer is yes and some of the answers are right on the idea that salt is present, but also any disolved solute will lower the freezing point and therefore make ice melt,
could be salt, sugar, vinegar, alum, baking soda. also good items to test for the science fair.

why do you think ice cream melts at a temperature below 32 degrees? ( why does frost condense on an ice cream carton even though the icecream is getting soft?)

Only if it's above freezing temperature.

The "heat' you're feeling is actually chemicals in the chili or sauce that are irritating the skin of your mouth and tongue -- it's not actually generating any warmth.

they will not melt ice any better than some other liquid.
The heat of hot sauce is from Capsaicin not thermal heat.

Yes, if for no other reason than both have salt in them.
