Ok, believe it or not, I actually know the real answer to this question! I was watching the Food Network on TV and they were talking about fast food chains, so here's the dish on the Big M.
McDonald's was originally just a drive through fast food chain, so there were no seat inside. The structure of the building of the very first McDonald's just happened to have a double arch, so that at an angle, it looked like an M, which worked out great, since it matched the first letter of the founder's lastname...McDonald! Therefore, we have the giant M everywhere around McDonald's!

Since Ray Kroc was the founder I believe that the big M must stand for McDonalds.

Well they claim it means McDonald's but I have read that it stands for Mason's because the McDonald's company is apart of the Masonic group a secret society.
