They are becoming increasingly popular. Hollywood is making them or alternative versions of them in 3D. However, most of the movie theaters are not equipped to handle them yet. Hollywood Directors have come out and said, we will produce the content, but we need places to show it at. Most of the time, this is at theaters with digital projectors. Many theaters are unwilling to invest money into a new infrastructure or they are weary of the ROI from doing so. It is expensive to do.
George Lucas has hinted that all of the Star Wars films will be converted over to 3D. This is a process call dimensionalization. Peter Jackson likes 3D. James Cameron is making a new trilogy (Sci-FI) in 3D.
It's coming baby...Business just needs to work the kinks out.

What are we doing with the 3D technology?
I don't need things looming at me or being jabbed in my general direction if the plot blows like a fan factory.
A lot of the 3D films exploit the gimmick without much thought as to anything else.
3D would work if it was immersive, almost like a virtual reality

It is a pure gimmick. They came our in the 50's as a way to try to get people into the theaters at the tail end of the studio system. Wide screen formats were made at about the same time for the same reason. Wide screen made it because you did not have to do any weird gimmicks to show it off. With 3D, they usually due stupid gimmicky things to show it off. The only good 3D movie of the time was a good movie without 3D: Dial M for Murder.
#d movies today rely on the same stupid gimmicks.

I saw Superman Returns in IMAX 3D, and I hated it. The glasses were a distraction, and the extra dimension looked terrible. Most of the people I spoke with after the movie felt similar, but there were a few people who really enjoyed it. What it comes down to is this: The market isn't there yet.

They're probably really hard to make, and get out there. But they probably will become popular later on, because they're great to watch, and as technology improves, it should be easier to make them.
Also, I feel that 3D moves can be kinda hard to watch sometimes, cuz there's more to focus on.

They are really expensive to make and I don't know about you but they give me a serious headache after about 1/2 an hour.

video clips that are filmed to take income of three-D are fairly sturdy, like Avatar and Prometheus. yet average, human beings would not pay extra for 3-D, somewhat human beings like me who placed on glasses and it makes the three-D glasses over it clunky.
