The first child of Stephen Koenig Armstrong and Viola Louise Engel, Neil Armstrong was born at 12:31 a.m. on August 5, 1930 in the Chiefs.

His father's last forced move was to Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1944. By this time, Neil was active in the Boy Scouts and had earned the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult he would be recognized by the Boy Scouts of America with their Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and Silver Buffalo Award. In Wapakoneta, he attended Blume High School.


American astronaut, test pilot, and Naval Aviator who is widely known for being the first human ever to set foot on the Moon.

From 1949 to 1952 served as a naval aviator. He flew 78 combat missions during the Korean War. During 1971-1979, Armstrong was a professor of aerospace engineering at the NACA High Speed Flight Station at Edwards AFB, California. He was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft, including the 4,000 mph X-15. He has flown over 200 models of aircraft, including jets, rockets, helicopters and gliders.
In 1962 he was transferred to astronaut status. He served as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, launched March 16, 1966, and performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.
In 1969 he was commander of Apollo 11, the first lunar landing mission and gained distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and the first man to step on its surface.
He subsequently held the position of Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, NASA Headquarters Office of Advanced Research and Technology, from 1970 to 1971. He resigned from NASA in 1971.
