whos bright idea was it to give it a 0845********* whatever number, people ring 999 because they cannot remember, why didnt they say 777 or some thing memorable, I always ring my local station, but if you are out and you see someone doing something illegal, you dont think, o whats that 0845 number, do you

I agree.It is a stupidly long number and impossible to remember,especially when you are under pressure or panicking

I think it comes into whether or not it is an emergency. It would be nice if police had an alternative to non-emergency crime in progress, police response requested. I know in my town you call the non emergency number and it is specifically to request police response. In the states we do 911, dont' see why we can't have an 811.
