Hm...excellent question. But firstly you must ask, is Dumbledore even dead? Well...that's getting too deep.

Anyway, since the book made it look as if Snape killed Dumbledore, let's look at that exact moment. Did Snape kill Dumbledore with Avada Kedavra? I doubt it. Every other instance in the books where Avada Kedavra is used, there's blinding green flash and the vistim simply collapses to the floor. Instead, what we have is simply a green light shooting from Snapes wand, and then Dumbledore flies up in the air and out of the tower. Does that seem consistant with everything else we've seen?

Now, why is it that so much of this book was dedicated to learning to say spells in your head, instead of aloud? Perhaps Snape said "Avada kedavra" but was thinking a different spell in his head, one that wou make Dumbledore appear to be dead. We already know that to perform an Unforgivable Curse, you have to really mean it (Book 5). If Snape didn't really mean it, saying it aloud wouldn't have done anything.

So....I don't think Snape is against Dumbledore. I think he helped fake Dumbeldore's death for some greater purpose that we don't yet know.

Another fascinating bit of evidence is the *Missing Text*. In the American version of the book, when Dumbledore is speaking to Malfoy up on the tower, he says that he can help hid Malfoy and his mother, possibly faking their deaths. Dumbledore says, "He cannot kill you if you are already dead." Perhaps this is what Dumbledore had already planned for himself. What's important is that this line and a few more lines about Draco being "killed" are MISSING from the UK edition of the book. Why is that? Did JKR or her editors change their minds at the last minute, deciding that information was too obvious? Or was it a JKR clue to either make us realize what's going on? Or perhaps just something thrown in to confuse us further?

*sigh* Basically, JKR is a crafty lady and we can guess all we want but I'm sure she'll still manage to totally catch us off guard with the final book.

Professor Snape killed Dumbledore

We can say with reasonable confidence that Professor Severus Snape killed Dumbledore. The only question is, under whose orders? My theory is that Snape was Dumbledore's "Dr. Kivorkian," sworn to kill him if he lost his powers (which he apparently did as a result of drinking the potion in the cave), so that Hogwarts would not be faced with having a headmaster (and the Order of the Phoenix with having a head) whose powers had been destroyed. He can still communicate through the portrait in McGonagall's office -- the headmistress's office, where all those portraits of former headmaster and headmistresses remain available for advice and consultation, and even for spying through their other pictures, like the one in the Order's second floor, which spied on Harry when he was there. Dumbledore was clearly important enough that his portrait probably hangs in several places.

Literally, Snape killed Dumbledore

However I'd say Voldemort killed Dumbledore, indirectly. It seems clear Dumbledore wasn't in good shape after drinking the potion. Snape's 'Avada Kedavera' may have quickened the process but It's very likely that he only did this to preserve his cover, and is in any case like shooting a drowning man.

Think about it..Dumbledore may not be dead...it is the perfect cover story for Snape to get in good with Hewhoshallnotbe named. Remember Dumbledore's bird is a Phenoix and they rise from the ashes. It will also give Dumbledore room to work on the situation if they think he is dead.

It was Professor Severus Snape but I'm unsure whether he killed Dumbledore because he's a nasty creature or if he killed him for another more empathic reason.
