If this is a cold, antibiotics will probably not be helpful- colds are viruses, and abx only help with bacterial infections.

Most cold meds are fine for breastfeeding (check the info in the links for a detailed discussion of this). Tips:

-Try to avoid taking combination meds that treat symptoms you don't have. Treat only the symptoms you're actually experiencing (this cuts down on taking unnecessary drugs).

-Be careful with decongestants; in about a third of moms, they can cause supply problems. (They dry up milk like they dry up mucous)

-Make sure you continue to nurse your baby regularly; you don't want to deal with engorgement or plugged ducts etc while you're already sick.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

PS: The people claiming you can't take any drugs ever while breastfeeding are just wrong.

Check with your OB or your baby's pediatrician before taking any medications while breastfeeding - Rx or OTC. There are many meds you can take, but many you cannot take as well. Don't put your baby at risk - make a call to the Dr.

Many medications are perfectly safe. Check this list. Drugs rated L1, L2, or L3 are considered safe: http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-approved-meds.html

No! what you eat is what she gets. You want to ask your doctor what is a good way to prevent your baby from consuming the medication through your breast milk. Something like vicks, steam vapor to release your congestion will help and won't harm your child. Be sure to call the doctor, first hope you feel better......

No, anything you take goes into your bloodstream and that includes your breast milk. If there is alcohol in the meds then the baby will be drinking alcohol. My suggestion would be to talk to your physician and see what kind of natural products you can take to combat a cold and remember WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN!!!

Call your pediatrician before taking over the counter meds. If you got them from your doctor call and ask.

Call and ask your Dr. I know I took some when I was breastfeeding but they were given to me by my Dr or he told me they were ok. I know Tylenol for sure is ok.
