The key to search engine placement is keyword related content and proper useage of keywords within the content. For example key words will place better if used within a heading tag than if used within a DIV that uses the same formatting. Another big factor is inbound links from sites with related content.
As far as protecting your email, you can not really protect against the people who just read your address and use it. You can use a simple javascript to seperate the address into a series of individual components that are reassembled on the screen but invisible to to spam bots which harvest email addresses by spidering your site.

To avoid spam, never list an email address on a web site. Instead you have a forms page on a website where people fill out the form to send you a message.

The best way to advance yourself is to use Google's Ad Words. Yes, it is a Pay service, but that is actually the ONLY way to advance your website. Everything else is pure garbage.

Well, okay, you can make a television ad and put your URL on TV on all the major networks. That works too. But I get the idea you dont have a few million sitting around to do that...
