I would attribute the global acrimony towards the US being caused because of our flagrant hypocrisy. We talk about democracy and freedom, and yet many times we act tyrannically with other nations. It’s this dichotomy between our rhetoric and our actions that enrages the world.

Prosperity does not in itself engender hatred. When was the last time Japan invaded anybody? When a terrorist attack occurred in Japan, did they invade Korea? I would imagine the Japanese themselves might harbor some submerged dislike for Americans.(I know you did not mean to include Mexico in the hated group.) I mean we did use them to prove what the A-bomb could do. But I think the major driving force behind the resentment is that we seem to insist (much against the apparent wishes of the writers of the constitution) that Judeo-Christian values and the English language are naturally superior to anyone else's language and philosophy. Of course Dick Cheney doesn't help.

It would be informative to conduct a sample survey of people on the streets and roads of each major country around the world and if someone could do that correctly we might find out that most average citizens of most countries really like people from the USA.
You can't always believe the media or the politicians you know.

It's not North America...just the good ole USA....we have become the bully of the world playground, trying to force democracy and our own ideas on the rest of the world...we butt our noses into far too many issues that have nothing to do with us...and if we don't agree with another nation's ways then we try and change them, either by sanctions or trade bans or by reducing aid or by all out open war.....I think that once our government changes (bush gets out of office) things will start getting better but it will take some time to repair....and please don't think that I don't love the US....i wouldn't live anywhere else in the world....i think we just need different leadership to fix our foreign policy problems...

They don't it is a figment of someones imagination. We are the 800 pund guerilla, love or hate us it makes no difference, you are still going to have to deal with us.
BTW I could care less what other countries think of the US and I visit about 15 other countries annually. Based on that real life experience, I would have to say other countries love us.

Why are you still in the U.S if you fear being hated so much? Why do you care if some third world country thinks we are arrogant? As long as we are a super power we will not be liked. Honestly I'd rather be disliked and happy than well liked and miserable because a bomb went off in my backyard.

It's not jealousy, ignorance, or "because they hate our freedom." They hate us because we have an imperialistic government hell bent on regulating what the world is doing. Not for a good cause either but they wish to rule everything. Not everyone wishes for the USA to come around and "bless" them with democracy or what passes for democracy in this country.

I don't know if the whole world hates the USA people, but many outside of the muslim world do not like the Bush administration, for its overbearing, dishonest, ignorant and arrogant ways. Unfortunately to some the american people get tarred with the same brush.
The fact that many follow his rhetoric does not help.
Axis of evil? do you want freedom fries with that?

Agrees with the above.
I haven't heard many other countries say they hate Canada.
USA's arrogance has a great deal to do with it but it is years of wars and views and politics. To sum it up in here would take pages and pages.
Countries that are known to dislike the USA usually has some citizens that do not dislike them but would love to become a USA citizen.
The view of a nation does not accurately reflect the view of every individual in that nation.

hmmm .... I couldn't help but remembering a particular joke as an answer for you ...
Here it is:
Once upon a time, a world-wide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:
"Please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"
The survey didn’t get any results because...:
1. In South America they didn't know what "please" means.
2. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what “honest" means.
3. In China they didn't know what "opinion" means.
4. In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" means.
5. In Africa they didn't know what “food" means.
6. In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" means.
7. In USA they didn't know what “the rest of the world" means.
