Arai is the best by a good margin, Shoei is next with a big drop down from there. ICON stuff is junk its mainly for posers.

I have a ScorpionEXO 400. I love this helmet - inexpensive, one of the best (meets the same standards and passes the same tests and is recommended as highly as Arai). I have heard nothing but good things about ScorpionEXO helments from other dealers, as well as fellow riders who have owned or do own them. I think they are the best.
I also have an HJC, but haven't heard much about them. I like the fit, and the price was right, and it looks nice - but I still trust my Scorp more!
If you want to get one under 200, to with the Scorpion - otherwise, Shoei or Arai are competitive and are over 500 each.
You may also consider an HJC Force 2 - I like the design (naked chick on the side of a WWII bomber - very cool, and artsy).

Different brands of helmets are shaped differently. My XXXL sized HJC helmet fits my head nicely. I tried other brands but none at any price fit properly. Several brands just don't make a helmet even large enough to even fit over my head. no two heads are the same; I wish more helmet companies would provide helmets of different configurations. An ill fitted helmet can do more damage than no helmet. Take your time choosing a new helmet and try as many different brands as you can to find the right one.

I was a big Shoei fan until I purchased an Arai RX-7. The Arai is really lightweight. Arai helmets are really pricey, though.
I recommend you go to your local dealer and try on different helmets.
Some helmets are made for fat heads, while others are made for heads that are narrower. Arai has three different types of helmets for different sized heads.
-Ask yourself how much you want to spend. Usually, the solid-colored helmets (black, grey, white) are cheaper. Make sure the helmets have a DOT sticker on them to ensure they comply with safety standards in case your head hits the pavement!

There are many things to consider when buying a helmet. For info on that check out http://www.motorcyclegiftshop.com/motorcycle_helmets.html
The Motorcyclist did a great story comparing DOT approved, SNELL approved and European helmet standards:

I personally wear an HJC but have not been in a crash with it.

The So stated as Nazi helmet change into used through various international locations. which include Spain and Chili. today the yankee militia Kevlar helmet is a take off the that helmet layout. The crap helmets that the idiots are donning.....enable them, we opt to chlorinate the gene pool one way or yet another.

i have an hjc to, it all boils down to what the helmet options are and what you want, they are all snell and d.o.t. certified to, for protection they all work, so it boils down to function, like air vents fit graphics, buy a shoi is like buying a bmw your paying for the name, keep your hjc as long as it fit correctly and you ware it always you will be just fine,,,
