I am at a bit of a loss here, I dont know anything about what you have been reading, or who wrote it!
But as a normal man of the street not really very clever just about your 'average' guy in fact!
I am sure that I know my motives, if I give a feller a kick in his ba**s, my motive for that is to inflict phyisical pain!
If I slag a feller off in public my motive is to inflict mental pain or humiliation! I cant see any problems about me knowing that! Why else would I do either of those things, was it because my Mother took away my dummy(comforter) or doll when I was a 17 year old lad??
So my answer to your question is not horrified at all, and if some one was to give me any other 'deep seated' reason for my 'motives' he would recieve the same unbiased treatment! PRA**S (I'ts the 'tt' thats missing!! not sure what motivated me to insert that, but I seem to recall my Granny wouldnt let me wear a pink dress when I was a 17 year old lad)
