Yes it is possible and probably happens a lot, but many mediums are actually perfectly genuine. I bumped into a medium 200 miles from my home where no-one knew I was going to be - the first thing she told me was my own name (and I don't wear it on my clothes or jewellery and it's not particularly common, nor did I have any friends or anyone with me who she could have heard say my name). The next thing she did was to describe a symptom my grandmother had before she died, which was "not being able to swallow".

Some colleagues told me a while ago they had been to see a psychic in our town and been totally unimpressed with her. Until some weeks later when everything she had predicted came true. One of my colleagues had been very scornful, as she had been told she would change her job soon. "After 25 years in the same job? I don't THINK so!" my colleague said. Then a few months later they closed down the firm's office in that town and guess what?? She DID have to change her job after 25 years!

Yes. Some mediums are genuine con artists who prey on the niave. They rely on their clients to give away information about their dead relative so that they can use it. They may begin with a vague comment for example "there is a woman here with me now who has grey hair" (i'm sure everyone knows somebody dead who had grey hair). The client might say "oh my aunty Hilda had grey hair". The medium may then say I'm getting the letter "H", her name begins with "H". (Well yeah, the client has given you that information). Grandmother figure is a good one as well. Everyone has a grand mother or a great grandmother on the other side. So the medium might say, there is grand mother figure with you, she has grey hair". Common names might be mentioned like Doris, or Dorothy, Edith etc. Most people have an old dead relative with a name like that and if you don't they might say something like "It definately begins with the letter D". The niave client will then scrape the barrel of his/her mind for a dead relative who's name began with the letter D. He/she may eventually come up with "Well, my grandma on my dads side had a cousin called Diane..." The medium can then fill in the gaps with vague information. Diane used to cook (most women do) the medium can then risk pushing the boat out a bit "Diane was famous for her cakes" and the client might say Yes- she killed the local vicar with her choclate sponge, her ring got stuck in his throat. It was in the papers". (most people have something to say about a relatives cooking, be it extremely good or extremely bad- but either way it can be seen as "famous" in the sense that all the family and friends loved/hated it. This is just an example of how a fraudulent medium can manipulate a naive client.

Unfortunately there are a lot of cranks out there that do that already and that is really cruel, some people just want closure when a loved one dies, especially if they were not together at the end and to pray on peoples minds by pretending you have a message for them is sick and cruel, thankfully there are some really good psychics out there too and they would never do that to anyone.

Of course. Churches worldwide pretend that something is watching over the world and everything you do. People are stupid enough to believe that so why wouldnt the lesser damage of speaking to a dead person be unbelievable ?.

Yes , this is the basis of Spiritualism but I don't think their prime motivation is to manipulate people.

sadly yes, there are some people out there who have no morals and prey on vulnerable and naive people
and it is because of this that true mediums who harm nobody but help so many sometimes get a bad press.
