It gives each network chip an ID and encrypts your data.
The only thing is now you don't have any privacy, if you had some to begin with.

Some measurement you can take:

1) Patch the operating system and application. Make sure the patches are up-to-date
2) Install Antivirus and update virus signature from time to time
3) Install personal firewall
4) Educate yourself about computer security, a good site to start: http://www.cert.org
