Because many people in society don't live by their standards, so they want the government to force their standards on the people around them. They don't like drugs, so they want to force the government to arrest people for smoking. They don't like people talking on cell phones while driving, so they want the government to force people not to talk and drive. They don't like people sagging their pants so they want the government to force people not to sag their pants. They don't like trans fat or unhealthy food, so they want the government to force restaurants not to use trans fats anymore. They don't like loud music, so they want the government to force people not to play loud music. They don't like school shootings, so they want the government to set schools up like a prison. People want other people to be punished for things that they don't like, even if it has NO affect on their personal life, other thanthe fact that it annoys them. Some things illegal do affect other peoples life in more ways than an annoyance, but they way we deal with it is wrong too. We should be taught the good and bad things about drugs, and given the freedom to choose whether or not we want to smoke. Drug addiction is a medical, social, and spiritual problem, not a criminal problem. We should not be ticketed for talking on a cell phone and driving. We should not be ticketed for loud music. Neighbors should just call the neighbor and tell them to shut the f*ck up. We should not be ticketed for flashy lights on our cars. We should not be told how to wear our clothes. We should not be told how to eat. We should not turn our schools into prisons. We should teach kids that violence is wrong. We should teach kids to treat each person equally. Parents should take responcibilty for their children, and not have the school do the parenting for them. And we should not be told what to eat, or how to eat. "I say **** authority!"

Some peeple- no, I'm sorry, it's peple for the limited case- like to let someone else be responsible for their actions. If you can say "I was just following the orders that the autharty person gave me" then you don't have to take the blame when you screw up. Not all peeple (global version this time) like the easy-out that being directed by an autharty figure provides. Some peple want to take responsibility for themselves.

In Europe, the Church was the authority before the printing press existed -- the "pre-modern" world which lasted up to the 1920's. The common folk relied upon the Church for religious interpretation and instruction. Then, the printing press was invented and the common folk could start reading and thinking for themselves. Some people prefer the pre-modern era (wanting authority figures to tell them what to do).
