Very simple question, very complex answer (and one I'm sure to only scratch the surface on).

Some factors that have had an important effect:
- climate
- lack of close enemies
- resources
- secular rather than religeous government
- work ethic of population
- belief in place in world

Note that while your question specifies NA as the focus, many countries in Europe, and Japan, India and China also all can be considered to fall into "developed world". So don't consider too narrowly!

Of the above factors I consider secular government as being the single most important.

That sounds like a homework question to me. Have you thought about some research on your own in encyclopedias, your textbook (if this is a school class), and on the internet?

Technology snowballs. As you have more technology, you have the ability to create/build new technologies all the more faster, creating an exponential curve of development.

The British Empire became the biggest in the world by taking whatever it wanted whenever it wanted and killing anybody who got in its way.

Sound familiar?
