None of my ancestors lived in America during the period that the colonies practiced slavery. Further more, African tribes sold the neighboring tribes that they conquered into slavery. I never owned a slave and I can't be responsible for what happened a hundred or more years ago. This country has dumbed down the schools to accommodate minorities and instituted affirmative action. As a consequence, we now have people graduating who can't read, write and perform basic math. I've had enough. Slavery was horrible. There was no excuse for it. It was practiced by just about every civilization including the European nations. It is time to get over it and get an education and a job. I feel that if this country owes anything to anybody at this point, it is to the American Indian. The only concession that we have made to them is the right to carry on gambling in casinos. To that, I can only say-big deal.

I agree with Legs, it's about time we move on. Yes, it happened and it was wrong, but it was not the first time something like this has happened in history. Things like this has occurred around the world throughout history.
Anyway, let's say for a moment that it's decided that the decendents should receive some monitary compensation for the suffering their ancestors suffered. I have no idea how you would even figure out how you would go about figure out what it was worth, but I don't think the tax payers should have to pay for it. If anybody should have to pay for it, it should be the ancestors of the ones who owned the slaves. Needless to say, it would be a very big mess and it might be a nightmare for some people to prove they were decendents of slaves and in the end they might end up receiving very little cash for their efforts. Especially, when the amount of money has to be divided up for one slave to so many generations, and if a family had several slaves there might be very little money to start with.
"Let the African-Americans have a black President"? If an African-American were to run and he were a better candidate, I would have no problem voting for him/her. I voted for Senator Barack Obama and I would vote for him if he were to run for President, or Colin Powell if he were to run. But, as far as "Letting" goes there has to be candidate, who's willing to step up to the plate and run and who's got the qualifications to hold the office and the chance to win.

This reminds me exactly of the situation Germany is in still today.
I am a native German, born 1963, thus was not at all involved in any Holocaust actions of any kind, wasn't even born yet. Yet, all Germans must pay the Israelis as a kind of punishment for the Holocaust. Yes, still today, german taxmoney is flowing.
Whenever a conservative or liberal politician (in Germany the liberals are a party!) only suggests the idea of maybe stopping that one day...he has to step down from his office, it is made a scandal, because just that idea is kinda forbidden.
We were taught we are guilty (yes, we who were born 20 years after), and the payback must never stop.
I am sooo sick of that!
Now your question sounds just like that.
All people alive nowadays have never been involved in slavery, and I can't see why they should be responsible.
And also: the natives come first! While Blacks have been kinda paid back (in form of positive discrimination), the Natives still live in utter poverty, without education, health care or even enough food. Just the other day I saw it on Oprah.
I think it is about time to discuss what has been done to them. You had your movies and TV shows (Roots an such), the Natives did not (at least I don't know any).

They should not be compinsated for the suffering of their ancestors. They were not there! They did not suffer! I don't complain about how my ancestors died. You know why? becuase i have not suffered mentally or physically because of it. The african american society is not the only culture to suffer. Everyone has suffered. Indians, chinese, russians. Everyone. And whats "let them have a black president" mean? I thought the president served all races and colors in our country. Slavery in America has been over for decades. Quit bitching. Oh, and where is my compensation when Ghengas Khaun parraded through the now Russian part of Asia? His armys killed and enslaved millions of 'my people'.

I know (some) of your suggestions are ironic to make a point. I find the obsession with illegal immigration quite distateful given that the US was built on immigration - both voluntary AND forced.
So howzabout Americans just accepting that people from other countires will want to come to theirs and do the jobs nobody else really wants. It's Karma, surely.
BTW - I accidently gave your answer to the question about the future impact of illegal immigration on american society a thumbs down. i meant to give it a thumbs up. I have thumbs-ed two of your other answer to compensate - sorry.

All that needs to be done is to completely remove the harm caused by slavery. Not easy, but possible. Remove the benefits that persons today received from slavery. Some of them are still around. America was founded on the principle that "all men are created equal", which means not that every grows to be 6' tall with an IQ of 120, but that a person born in America has no limits on what they can do, save their own abilities and ambitions. That was not true for the rest of the world with its noble and peasant classes. So, make sure that wealth (e.g., from slavery profits) is not passed down to future generations. Stop the Anti-American "End the Death Tax" idea and allow the American dream of making it on your own thrive.

Honestly, I think that we dont owe them anything.
1. We already offer a lot of benefits that we dont offer the Indians who we really screwed. That were here before us and now are almost non-existant.
2. Their own people sold them to us! Why arent they going over to Africa to raise hell with them for that?
3. Most educated normal black people remember what happend, but know that was a long time ago. It wasnt this generation that did it and it wasnt this generation of black people that suffered through it. So why should this generation pay back a generation that did not suffer through it?
4. How would Martin Luther King feel if he saw the reverse discrimination? I dont think he would like it. He worked his butt off and died for a great cause. Just for the people that cry discrimination to show it? You get treated based on how you act.
And thats what I think. I believe there are many wonderful and remarkable black people out there. But I also believe that there are many who try and get pitty and blame their bad behavoir on things that happend to their parents. Things they should learn from and grow from, not cause more issues over.

As a completely non-racist, white American woman...I think everyone needs to get the hell over it!!!! I'm so tired of hearing about how the white Americans owe the African-American community something because of slavery. It was not me that owned a slave, for that matter, my ancestors may not have either. If everyone would work hard and make their own way, no one would be thinking the rest of the world owed them anything. Slavery happened, we can't change it now or "make up" for it. I think it was horrible what was done to Africans and other people of color, but you know, it's over and done with. Move On!!!

there is in all probability no honest and equitable thank you to distribute reparations and be certain who will pay what. some factors to contemplate: a million. might the decendants of the 1000's of Union squaddies who died interior the Civil conflict be expempt from making money? 2. might all those whose ancestors got here to this us of a after the top of slavery be exempt. 3. might human beings of mixed race could desire to make money to boot as obtain some. How might that be accomplished. 4. might people who've won fairly some forms of government advantages have a undeniable element deducted from their reparation money? 5. might companies interior the North that exploited immigrant exertions be held as to blame as planters interior the South? the former team paid wages yet did no longer take any duty for their workers. The latter team did no longer pay wages, profited from slave exertions, yet took duty for their workers from cradle to grave. the two structures had their inequities. How do you establish which workers are owed greater? The record of questions could desire to bypass on and on. isn't there some thank you to settle the money owed in procedures that don't pit one team of human beings against yet another? they could be argued advert infinitem, yet there are no longer hassle-free solutions. possibly we could desire to continuously discover a thank you to settle the depts of yet another era in a fashion that works for each individual. case in point, quite everyone's infants deserve reliable educations, equivalent oportunities and the mutual admire of all different human beings. If all of us artwork in direction of those goals, inspite of the situations of our ancestors, in time, we could desire to discover guidance on a thank you to make issues greater desirable, if no longer precisely even.

I am saddened for what happened but I think enough is enough. I think they have just as much of a chance as white people do maybe more. This is my opinion and I do not expect everyone to agree. I personally think that the Indians got a bad deal too.
