I am in the market to buy a minivan because of family size, and I found one that is a good price but it says it needs a short block. What kind of pricing and labor would this entail if I were to get something like that fixed?

A 'short block' is an engine without the cylinder heads and other 'outside' parts like the intake manifold and carburetor/fuel injectors, exhaust manifold, etc.; that is, the engine block with crankshaft, pistons and rods installed, and maybe also the oil pump and oil pan.

If you need a new short block, it means in essence you need a new engine - thousands of dollars in parts and labor.

How inexpensive is the van?

A short block means a new engine. The short block is the whole lower part of the engine, minus the the cylinder heads. But basically, you're looking at replacing the whole engine. Unless you have a good friend who is a mechanic and has access to inexpensive rebuilt motors, or a junkyard motor, it will be very very expensive to replace the short block on the van.

To be honest, it will cost you at LEAST 1000 dollars to replace the short block- and that is if you go with a good junkyard motor, and you have a friend who can do the job for cheap.

More than likely, the job will cost you around 2500 dollars. If you choose to buy the van, I recommend that you buy a good engine- NOT a junkyard engine. Go with a professionaly rebuilt shortblock engine, with some kind of warranty.

It depends on the year model, make etc. as to the price of the motor- it will probably cost around apx. 1500 dollars for the engine, and about 1000 dollars for labor. That's how I guesstimate the 2500 dollar figure.

If the van is extremely inexpensive and is in good condition otherwise, and you have the extra money (2500 at least) to fix the van, you might want to buy it.

But to be honest, it will be a lot of work, and it will take time and money.

I really recommend that you have a mechanic check out the van first, and consult you. They can give you a better estimate on how much it will cost you to fix the van.

You have to consider how much money you would save if you bought this particular van and then fixed it to good running condition, versus the price of a van already in good running condition.

Good luck!

This is the Engine without the Heads. A Long block is Engine with the Heads. So, what you looks at is a minivan that needs a New or Rebuilt Engine. Which can cost you more than buying one in good condition not needing work. I not sure what you look at, but, just for a Ballpark price, a rebuilt engine may cost $800 and then Labor to put it in $300 + so add what you paying for it to $1,100 and see if you can find something newer and in better condition for that price.

It's the engine.

A short block typically consists of the entire LOWER part of the engine. Everything under the heads is consider a short block. If the vehicle needs as short block, the heads are more than likely to be shot to and you probably really need a long block (a rebuilt engine including the heads which have been machined to spec, typically also new oil pump).

It's an expensive process. At least $2000 + labor (at a minimum)

My advice is to keep looking.

Short Block is a term used for engine size. the minivan needs an engine. parts and labor could run into the thousands.

A short block is the main part of an engine with all the bolt on parts removed. You are looking at quite a bit of money to have the car repaired. Will definately be over $1000.00. Could be much higher. Get a quote from a repair shop before you buy.,

i own a repair shop, and the short block is a term used for just replacing the bottom half of the engine,,not the whole engine will be replaced in it,,they,ll re-use the head,s that are on it,and all the other bolt on items ,price wise this will probably cost around 1500 to get done,,so id think about it before jumped in on this one,,you might find a better one for less,,good luck i hope this help,s.
