If you lived on the plains, the temperature could fall more than that in just one hour.

When a Canadian cold front sweeps down across the northern plains, cold winds just come blasting through. Not only is the wind cold, it even smells cold.

If you live at high altitude in a dry climate, the temperature can easily drop 20 degrees in two or three hours - just as soon as the Sun sets. The temperature rises just as fast the next morning. Thin air changes temperature very easily.

Then a cold front has passed through.

I once experienced a 40F drop over 3 hours once in Utah. You could literally see the front ominously coming in. The day started in the 60s and by 5 PM in the 20s and snowing.
