I have a confirmed dead pine tree in the back yard (roughy 50 ft) and it's close enough to the house that I can't just take it down with an axe. So what's the best way to find a good tree service? There are many around in the phone book: what are some qualifications to look for in a tree service?
Also, any idea what I can expect to pay for the removal of one 50 ft. tree?

And yes, it is confirmed dead. I contacted the forest department and they verified this.
Thanks.

First off...
Make sure the Tree service has insurance and how much...are they bonded? Do they have a lisence arborists on staff? What equipment will they be using? A bucket truck? A crane? Dead trees cannot always be climbed due to their tendancy to topple, risking damage and injury. Will the stump be ground out? Gather that info and make a decision based on qualifications and price of the job. The cheapest is NOT always the best in this case. Good Luck.

I would only use a certified arborist they usually have a license number. Like what was said earlier ask to see a certificate of insurance before the work is done and if possible get several quotes. Since it is a pine tree the stump will rot away quickly so I would not spend money on stump removal. Make sure your written estimate includes debris removal. If you live in some cities curb side removal will not be done if a contractor removes the tree.... Best to you.......

Tree removal is expensive and I am in the NY/NJ area and I recommend that you shop around the yellow pages. Also, make sure whoever you select carries the proper liability insurance in case someone gets hurt or there is property damage. Good luck.

I agree with the other answers, look for insurance coverage and how much etc, but I would also make the suggestion that you contact your local electrical utility company to see who they contract out to for work on tree trimming and removal.
