There are three main lines.

Programming, Engineering and Hardware/Network Administration.

Programming includes Web Development and Database Administration. I don't do this so you'll get better advice elsewhere on it.

Engineering means designing the chips and hardware. Any EE line will be fine, but take CS courses with your electives.

I do Net Admin. I have a degree in Chemistry, so the college advice is limited because they really didn't have much that wasn't programming when I was in school in the 80s. I didn't want to do programming so I did my second choice. If you want to do this, you should look at certifications when you are getting close to graduation. You should have a pretty good idea what you want to do by then. I have the Microsoft stuff because I mainly like to do server administration. If you find you are into routing, look at the Cisco things. There are the CompTIA ones too, but they tend to be pretty easy tests so they carry limited weight unless someone really has a thing for them. I reccomend that you look at certs only when you are getting close, because they will be outdated by the time you graduate. Hey and summer jobs really help. Books are not the same as doing it.

The pay varies. Right now web programers are hot. The Cisco stuff is hot, but there is a limited market. Four years is a long way to look in the future and try to guess in this industry. Go back 10 years and try to figure out what a web designer even would need and you will be pretty lost.

Think twice before getting into the tech field. There are many many many out of work persons in the IT/Programming/Computer'ish field. It's an employers market, so alot of these companies aren't paying what they used to. And alot of IT people are losing their jobs because the company they work for are shipping business to India.

Outsource is the devil. :(

But, if you study something a bit more obscure like say.. Unix, or Novell.. You may find an okay paying job.

Good luck!

Try to take the most sensible ones possible that have a practical value, as few as they'll probably be. Most of the classes are "liberal arts" B.S., to make you go through hoops to get a degree.

If there is a local junior college, I'd recommend visiting their academic counselors, they are usually trained to give this kind of advice that is specific for your town.
