My professor asked me if I had any ideas on how to get the students to particupate in class. I believe he asked me to get a perspective from a student. I have thought of one idea, but I would like more ideas. My idea is group work, but the flaw I see in that is that in some groups not everyone particupates. This course is a abnormal psy. in college.

Wow! I never had any professors that wanted interactivity! What type of participation are you referring to? Asking questions or participating in discussion?

One way is to have individual students be responsible for giving a part of the lecture on the material.

What I always liked were the instructors who made us answer our own questions by asking for pros and cons on a subject, writing them down on flowcharts, and then the class discussing the findings and agreeing on what the most important points are. For example, if the question were who in the psych community made the greatest contributions of the 20th century...as each name was rattled off by students someone would write it on the board. From there, you would break down and write out the good and bad contributions each person has made, from there, everyone agrees on who made the greatest contribution by process of discussion and elimination.

The bottom line is make the class fun and practical. How you do that is dependant on the class. For abnormal psy, you may do some "people watching" in the city, or have a "Sex in the City" party ('cause those people are nuts) or some things like that.

In addition to requiring attendance and addressing material in class that isn't in the text, vary the rhythm of the class -- don't just stand up and read from notes. Add humor, music, weird hats; throw a pencil against the wall to wake them up, or invite guest lecturers who you know will be great. Know your student's names. If someone doesn't show up, ask privately if everything is ok -- let them know you're paying attention to them as people. Use contemporary references to the material, to make it less boring. Tell them you write great reference letters, and do it. Encourage questions, even if you think they're stupid -- nothing shuts down a class faster than a sarcastic or bored professor.

Make class participation a large chunk of the final grade. If students want a decent grade, they'll have to participate.

Class participation is a part of your grade here. You dont participate you lose your grade.
