Do College athletics generate revenue?

Question

Are D1 College athletic programs generating revenue for their universities? If so does the money go towards the entire unversity or do they go back to the athletic program (Ie for scholarships and such). What about D2 and D3 athletic programs, how much would an average D3 athletic program generate per year?

I would think they do, and, not only for the College but the Community surrounding the College. The money would be utilized throughout the College I would say, though a larger % may go to Athletics. Uniforms, fields, medical etc, are not cheap.
