a battery's charge is measured by watt-hours
the watt hours are directly proportional to number of cells the battery is made up of
starting 4 cell (~ 32 watt-hours)
to the more popuar 6 cell (~ 54 watt-hours)
to 8 cell, 9 cell & the massive 12 or 16 cell

the average 6 cell holds charge for approx. 2 1/2 to 4 hours when new & running simple applications like spread sheets ...

batteries start deteriorating or derating beyond 1 1/2 yrs on average; a 4 cell may derate after only a years usage !

another 4 - 6 months of activity & derating is pretty steep

check above facts & lemme know if i can help further in matter
besides battery prices have crashed & select an appropriate one, not less than 6 cell

hope u'r system is not less than a year old ... then it's cause for worry

The laptop should have an endurance of 2-3 hours when being used in a power saving mode. Alternatively if you mean the length of time before the battery charge depletes when the PC is turned off, that should be about 6-12 weeks. If the battery is not holding charge when turned off, the battery is shot. Get a cheaper replacement from eBay, but ensure it is the genuine HP article not a cheap chinese version that explodes.

It all depends upon the state of the laptop. If it is turned off, then it is likely it's charge for two months.

If the power is on , then it depends upon the activity of the processor, hard disks and Optical drives.
If it is ON then it should hold the charge for about 2 and a half hours.
