Dell are good, however lots of problems lately with laptops blowing up, also sony batteries too. Otherwise i would recommend a sony one, i have one and its fab. also toshiba are good. Going to big companies are not always the best places to go so try online if you can. if not pc world or comet, curries type places. make sure they dont give you a load of rubbish as hard sell cos they don;t actually know very much more than the adverts say anyway, even thought they think they do, they say brands are crap but thats because they dont sell that brand in their store.
just be wary

For £500 you won't get much, not of any great quality at least. Try a big shop like PC World, or better yet look out for a 2nd-hand bargain in the paper.

Go to a couple of shops (without your credit card) & just ask advice & for demos. Then go home & make your mind up & buy it later in the week.
John Lewis staff are pretty good & you usually get 2 years free warranty ratrher than 1.

enable me preface through pointing out that i'm a qualified Dell and HP Reseller. I truly don't have any further some thing antagonistic to Macs in any respect. in fact, i'm particularly inspired through the present Macbooks. in case you want the Microsoft operating equipment, the Dell Vostro computer has been my present day %. for perfect fee for lowend laptops. in my opinion, you're evaluating apples to oranges. they don't research to one yet another as they both have diverse reward. My professional opinion: Macbooks - sturdy (equipped on Unix platform), good classes, effortless, extra inflexible criteria, extra perfect video modifying potential, skill to run XP very almost (using software). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with software, various hardware thoughts, a lot less intense priced. i assistance you examine with your instructors first and ask what they're going to be using. ultimately, you'll detect a lot less topics in case you whichever platform they're using.

Get hold of a copy of Computer Shopper, October issue - has a good review of £500 laptops.

jus dont buy one on the streets of london.. my friend parted with £200 quid thinking he had the latest Sony Vaio, yet was walking home with a suitcase full of coke cans..literally!!!
Go with a brand name... make sure its upgradable.. i wouldnt really recommend buying from your mate unless he still has warranty on it.. you could also try ebay.. but stick to proven sellers with high feedback if you do.. good Luck
